Now in its eighth edition, The Maktoums: Legends of the Turf is the most comprehensive record of the Dubai Ruling family’s involvement in Thoroughbred racing. Profiling the great champions that have represented the Maktoums, from Ajdal to Zilzal, Legends of the Turf also highlights equestrian history and culture which underscores the Maktoum's deep affection for racing.
Three decades ago the roots of racing’s Maktoum Era were sown. During the Tattersalls October Yearling Sales at Newmarket, the Curragh Bloodstock Agency purchased three lots on behalf of two owners who were new to the sport.
The arrival of the two princes from Dubai, the young Sheikh Maktoum and Sheikh Mohammed, as owners, may have been unheralded in 1976, but over subsequent decades they and Sheikh Hamdan and Sheikh Ahmed would not only go on to become among the world’s greatest owners but also the most influential family ever to enter the history books of the sport.
This, the eighth edition of Maktoums: Legends of the Turf, offers the most comprehensive view of this remarkable family’s involvement with thoroughbred racing. Focusing on the careers of the great champions to have competed and represented the family on the racecourse, the book also highlights the great Maktoum owned farms across the globe and the background on each sheikh’s involvement in racing. Also profiled are the next generation, the sons of the Maktoum brothers who are beginning to have such an influence on the sport.
In addition, the book focuses on the history and culture that surrounds the Maktoum family’s passion for racing and the horse — from the Godolphin Arabian to Godolphin of Dubai.
